Hey, gang. I had to wait to post this until everything was signed and sealed. The circle of life has turned again for me. I still do some work for GamerDNA (most visibly, a Friday column posted to the company blog) and I still do a bit of consulting on community issues, but I am now back into the dirty, dirty world of… MEDIA. I joined the staff of Massive Gamer – it’s a relatively new magazine just out of the harbor. I’m terribly excited. I’ll be working for Dana Massey (he who built MMORPG.com into a mighty empire, and dragged Warcry back into prominance) on the website when it launches, and I’m one of the associate editors on the actual magazine. The team is terrific, but to a degree the magazine is still finding its groove. Check us out and watch it grow!
Even as I charge forward into this incredible new opportunity, I don’t mind admitting that I miss studio work. There’s a buzz from working with players that’s hard to find in any other job. And yet, writing was my first career. I really meant to make a go of it, but the chance to build a community, and a community team, was too awesome to pass up when it came around. I’m laughing a little, right now, at the way things seem to turn. It’s like I broke up with my high school sweetheart so I could date the smoking hot lead guitarist of my favorite band, and the first dude was still there when I got tired of touring.
But who knows what the future holds, eh?
A lot of the people I’ve met in my travels vouched for me to the editor and the publisher of the magazine, and that blew me away. I never thought of myself as someone who did the whole long term friendship thing very well, and yet… the people helping me out have been my friends for going on a decade. Go know.
It was interesting to step back, and really consider how many of today’s editors, writers, and designers were yesterday’s IRC denizens, ranters, and whiners. Who among the commentators today will be presenting at AGC next year? Which blogger is going to catch fire, with the link going around the world? What post will catch the eye of a studio, leading the writer to a job?
We nerds are loyal and supportive despite our online rantings and insults about your mother. Gratz on the new gig!
Gratz! I’ll keep an eye on Massive.
Congrats Sanya
Can’t wait to check out Massive Magazine!
The fact that I have both you and Dana on IM and in Facebook means either 1) I can’t escape my past, or 2) I’m just as much a loser as you guys.
Since you’re doing well, I guess we can all be losers together. Congrats!
Congratulations! I’ll be sure to check it out, so be sure to post the URL.
Yeah, I really think writers these days, especially bloggers, have a great potential more than ever to get themselves out there, and all it takes is a simple YouTube video or a wordpress blog post linked around the world.
It’s a good time to be an online writer.
Grads
Congratz! hope that this job turns out to be as much fun as you’re anticipating!
Sending many dancing rodents to you!
those guys are fun, hung out with them at E3 a bunch
Congrats on the new gig, Sanya. I’m looking forward to checking out this Massive Gamer. Do give us an update when the site launches. Cheers!
Congrats! I sure hope this doesn’t mean you won’t be blogging anymore though!
I am very leary of magazines, as their main source of revenue is the advertisers, not the readers…
And I am also leary of mmorpg’s rating systems… their ratings are always based on very few hits/votes.. rather than what is actually being bought and played in the community.
But… if SANYA has a foot in it… I will definitely get a subscription when it comes out… if only to read the Tweety page.
I hope you enjoy it… that’s what counts.
If you get any letters to the editor that mention Sanya is blond… you will probably know who to blame.
gratz on the gid Sanya
Glad to hear it Tweets. You’re a class act and an asset to any organization. Why you were ever engaged to Dolph Lundgren is beyond me, but that’s in the sweet, forgotten past now.
Her engagement to Dolph was a fabrication by Lum the Mad because he was jealous that she was F%cking Matt Damon. (But who hasn’t?)
I bet there were bagels involved in this deal.
If you’re media now, then will we see you taking some MMOs to task in the future?
Congratulations on the new position.
Gratz, Sanya! Way to go mainstream!
…
Ummmm…I mean, “I wish you much success in your new endeavor,” with no hint of jealousy.
Seriously, nice job! Dana seems to usually know what he’s doing, so it should be a good ride for you…you lucky dog.
Hey, Sanya.. it’s time for Blizzcon.
How about some more of your stories regarding EEP (Elf Ear Promiscuity)?
Congrats Sanya!
Enjoy the new gig I’ll try and keep an eye out for it.
Congratulations! I’ve been receiving this magazine in the mail for some time now, though I have no idea how I was subscribed. In any case, I like it! And it also helps that Brasse is on the team, and now you are too! Yay!
