Got a Brand New Rag

Hey, gang. I had to wait to post this until everything was signed and sealed. The circle of life has turned again for me. I still do some work for GamerDNA (most visibly, a Friday column posted to the company blog) and I still do a bit of consulting on community issues, but I am now back into the dirty, dirty world of… MEDIA. I joined the staff of Massive Gamer – it’s a relatively new magazine just out of the harbor. I’m terribly excited. I’ll be working for Dana Massey (he who built MMORPG.com into a mighty empire, and dragged Warcry back into prominance) on the website when it launches, and I’m one of the associate editors on the actual magazine. The team is terrific, but to a degree the magazine is still finding its groove. Check us out and watch it grow!

Even as I charge forward into this incredible new opportunity, I don’t mind admitting that I miss studio work. There’s a buzz from working with players that’s hard to find in any other job. And yet, writing was my first career. I really meant to make a go of it, but the chance to build a community, and a community team, was too awesome to pass up when it came around. I’m laughing a little, right now, at the way things seem to turn. It’s like I broke up with my high school sweetheart so I could date the smoking hot lead guitarist of my favorite band, and the first dude was still there when I got tired of touring.

But who knows what the future holds, eh?

A lot of the people I’ve met in my travels vouched for me to the editor and the publisher of the magazine, and that blew me away. I never thought of myself as someone who did the whole long term friendship thing very well, and yet… the people helping me out have been my friends for going on a decade. Go know.

It was interesting to step back, and really consider how many of today’s editors, writers, and designers were yesterday’s IRC denizens, ranters, and whiners. Who among the commentators today will be presenting at AGC next year? Which blogger is going to catch fire, with the link going around the world? What post will catch the eye of a studio, leading the writer to a job?
