Back In the Saddle

So, I’ve been waiting until there was something I could actually, you know, show you. And at last there is!

I’m doing a little community work for a game company that is willing to state publicly that they’ve hired me as a community consultant. (Most places prefer to hire my expertise, or buy a few white papers, and pretend they came up with the material themselves. And you know what? That’s fine by me. You know why? Because ghostwriting almost always pays better than any other kind of writing.)

And for the first time since I started this whole itinerant community weenie thing, I’m really, really sorry that I’m going to be training my replacement this fall instead of coming on board permanently. (I can’t relocate, and this fall is when a local will come on board.) See, the game is… really fun. It’s an alpha build, and yet I have a wonderful time every time I play. I had fun playing it before I landed the gig helping them with the alpha. I would enjoy playing it if they weren’t paying me. That practically never happens with alphas.

So what is it? Elves? Robots? Zombies?

Football.

That’s right. I’m grooving on a sports game. THAT is how good it is.

Anyway, I wanted to tell the six of you first. If any of you are, or know, any real football fans (or people who run fantasy leagues) drop me a line.

Well that actually looks interesting. I’ll keep an eye on it.

    Line dropped.

I’m interested in seeing where they draw the player-skill vs character-skill balance.

Huh. I’ve been following this game for a bit because I’ve worked with the lead designer and most of the exec team at different times. (Oh and also YAY FOOTBALL.) Glad to hear they’re taking community seriously!

I love football. I even love the never-ending will he/won’t he saga of Brett Favre. Go Eagles!

I wish I could compete with that. Visually, it looks great! Unfortunately, I haven’t had enough time to improve the game I started building back in 2000.

Woot #6! Got in just under the wire. Grats on the work. It seems like a neat game. I’ll keep it on my radar.

Sellout! I mean, congrats. I really should create a word filter for that.

Wait, I’m post #7 that I see. Ha! You have more than 6 readers! ;)

“Hire new coaches, expand your playbook, outfit your team with all the latest gear, and enhance your facilities with top of the line equipment to give your team that extra edge on game day.”

If there is raiding involved so help me!!!!!!!!!!!

Football. :( I’m sorry, Sanya, but even for you I can’d do football.

Now, if it were Blood Bowl, that’d be a different story…

Yeah, that’s where my game comes in (OrcSports.com - orcs are the players). Trouble is, graphically, I’m about a decade behind the curve and game-wise, I’m also slipping behind. Lots of ideas, no implementation.

I keep telling myself that once school is over, I will work on it again, but it will never reach the professional quality that is evident on the Quick Hit site. That site is gorgeous. /jealous

Ya know, the similarities between Football and Turn-based Strategy games is quite uncanny.

Thanks for the link Sanya. My husband is in the next room squealing like a girl and practically wetting himself. Psst, he loves football. (Wonders if sending him the link was the brightest of ideas.)

Not my kind of thing at all, but it does look good for the genre.

That’s the one with the running and the kicking?

Ooh, no it’s the funny yankee one with the running and the pushing and the catching and the kicking in the teeth.

Not too far removed from Bloodbowl really… add in some Chainsaws and I’m sold.

Die hard football fan here. Usually try to make it to two Bears games a year.

(Which is a lot when you live in northern Michigan)

And what I want to point out about this action — or inaction — is that, interactionally speaking, it is a very simply action to perform. ,
