I still go back and re-read this post every so often, and it’s just as funny today as it was in the early days of EQ. Jeez, if you hate people so much, why become a guide? Sounds like you are just one bad petition away from reaching for the shotgun. Fact is, you were a guide for a game, which is full of little kids, and then you get infuriated at the immaturity? Duh…

Sorry but you sound like a total sociopath to me, and if you look down on everyone and everything to do with being a guide, then do something else. Lighthouse keeper maybe.

Believe it or not, this is absolutely fucking hilarious even to people who have never played EQ. Or at least those of us who can understand context. An absolute gem of a rant, and I’ve enjoyed all the others on the old site using Web Archive. I just recently got into the videogame industry, and I’m basically tasked with teaching myself the rich history of this business. Thanks for making my Community/MMO lessons interesting!

I came over via the EA Louse stuff. I was a long time player of DAoC and remember waiting every week for your grab bag.

That said. It’s sad that 10 years later it has only gotten worse. Especially the dude speak paragraph.

All I can say is WOW !!! That rant was a work of art. I played DAOC back in its heyday when there was 200k subscribers and in a fit of nostalgia I decided to look up the Herald of Camelot herself. Sanya, I never knew you had it in ya ! Good for you.

I disagree however with your claim, “… it kinda sucks as writing goes.” Proper English or writing or whatever cannot capture the burning hatred and disgust that people you often encounter in game will sometimes evoke. Your post I’m sure touched a deep nerve in the countless legions of decent people who believe rightly, that being physically removed from a social interaction does not absolve you of the responsibility of decency, consideration and civility.

Your rant gave a truly eloquent face to the rage and frustration that most feel when dealing with the donkeys and sociopaths who’s alternatively whiney or sadistic behavior is a regrettable fact of online life.
